On Türkiye’s political chessboard, history once again appears poised to deliver its verdict in favour of its most powerful and battle-tested political figure. The traditional manoeuvres and waves of opposition directed against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) are now visibly losing momentum. The latest developments on Türkiye’s political horizon have made one thing abundantly clear: the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary contests are set to be far more than routine electoral exercises. They are shaping up to become the prelude to another magnificent and historic triumph for Erdoğan, reaffirming both his formidable resolve and his enduring popular appeal.

The history of democracy bears witness to the extraordinary nature of commanding the hearts of the people for 23 consecutive years. Across the world, even long-established governments crumble within a matter of years under the weight of time, global economic pressures and changing circumstances. Yet Recep Tayyip Erdoğan continues to stand firm, like an immovable rock. He has demonstrated that he is far more than a politician occupying the highest seat of power: he embodies the Turkish nation’s self-confidence, political independence, defence prestige and regional standing. His leadership has served as an anchor for Türkiye amid the storms of successive crises, helping the nation navigate turbulent waters towards safer shores. His exceptional organisational acumen, strategic foresight and remarkable capacity to steer the country through crises remain among the principal pillars of public confidence in his leadership.

Meanwhile, the opposition’s dismal predicament and deepening internal divisions are presented as unmistakable evidence of the AK Party’s decisive advantage. The Republican People’s Party (CHP), the principal force of the traditional opposition, once aspired to present itself as a credible alternative to the government through bold claims and hollow slogans. Today, however, it finds itself engulfed in one of the most severe ideological and organisational crises in its history. On 24 July 2026, a historic revolt involving more than 90 members of parliament under Özgür Özel’s leadership, followed by the establishment of the “YENİ Parti”, shattered the foundations of the opposition’s purported strength. This historic split, involving 91 parliamentary seats, amounts to an open admission of a bitter reality: the opposition possesses neither a clear and constructive vision nor the capacity to confront the national and international challenges facing the country. Trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of fragmentation, this divided opposition now appears little more than a wall of sand when confronted with Erdoğan’s charismatic leadership.

The political earthquake extends well beyond the corridors of parliament. The balance of power on the ground is also shifting rapidly in the AK Party’s favour. By May 2026, more than 16 influential mayors elected on CHP tickets had joined the AK Party’s ranks, seeking to secure public welfare and a stable future. This political realignment is a clear indication that serious and responsible local leaders, too, increasingly see the country’s brighter future under the AK Party’s banner.

The most striking and symbolic turning point in this political upheaval is the historic decision attributed to İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay. For decades, İzmir has been regarded as an impregnable stronghold of the secular opposition. Now, the city’s powerful elected mayor has abandoned the CHP’s battered political vessel and embraced the AK Party. Having secured approximately 49 per cent of the vote in 2024, Tugay’s bold move is portrayed as a reflection of a growing public conviction that Türkiye’s survival, development and modernisation can be secured only through Erdoğan’s visionary leadership. When President Erdoğan pinned the AK Party’s traditional lapel badge on Cemil Tugay’s jacket at a dignified and spirited ceremony, the gesture sent an unmistakable and resounding message to the world: the Turkish nation’s political loyalties are breaking free from traditional strongholds and artificial ideological boundaries, with the public’s heart now beating with renewed force for Erdoğan.

The latest electoral assessments and opinion polls are also cited as confirmation of this political picture. Several surveys conducted in September 2026 place support for the AK Party at levels exceeding 35 per cent, while the fragmented opposition is portrayed as sinking into deeper political decline. The electorate, according to this assessment, has little to choose from beyond a collection of divided political groups. This political vacuum is further strengthening the AK Party’s appeal around its vision of national purpose and direction.

In the historic presidential contest of 2023, when all manner of domestic and international forces were aligned against him, Erdoğan nevertheless secured a commanding 52.18 per cent of the vote, writing a remarkable chapter in the history of political perseverance. The People’s Alliance, comprising the AK Party and its steadfast allies, particularly the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), is now presented as more united, stable and organised than ever before. Potential parliamentary and constitutional amendments, together with the prospect of constructive dialogue with the DEM Party, are also seen as developments that could further strengthen Erdoğan’s strategic position and political ascendancy. Whether the challenge lies in securing the necessary constitutional support in the 600-member parliament or determining the definitive date of an early election, the Erdoğan-led political movement is portrayed as fully prepared for the next electoral contest—whether it takes place at the end of 2027 or on 16 April 2028.

Critics may continue to raise the economy and inflation in an attempt to sow doubt, but the argument advanced here is that Erdoğan’s government has taken far-reaching measures to put the economy back on track, generate substantial employment opportunities and restore the public’s purchasing power despite global economic pressures. The Turkish people, it is argued, understand that their financial and social stability can be safeguarded by none other than the statesman who has brought modern Türkiye into the ranks of the world’s leading economic and industrial powers.

In conclusion, the opposition’s decline, the movement of influential local leaders into the ruling party’s camp, the purported capture of a symbolic stronghold such as İzmir, and the reported advantage reflected in opinion polls are presented as signs that history is preparing to write another chapter of distinction for Türkiye’s leading political figure. The central argument is unmistakable: the hearts, confidence and future aspirations of the Turkish people are inextricably linked to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The forthcoming elections, according to this vision, will become an unforgettable historic chapter, further cementing his political stature and marking another defining victory in his long career.
