Institute of Strategic Thinking (SDE) Chairman Yasin Aktay claimed that neo-nationalist circles are bothered by Turkey’s initiatives in foreign policy and said those who defend the former policies of Turkey don’t understand the unique language of effective foreign policy. Aktay also raised concerns in the event the CHP comes to power and said it will likely adopt a nationalist foreign policy again. The expert claimed that there is a campaign to return to a nationalist and isolationist foreign policy. “This is worrisome for Turkey,” he said. “The one and only consolation is that it’s unlikely the CHP will come to power.”
Aktay warned against the abandoning of Turkey’s recent foreign policy initiatives and said Turkey’s efforts in foreign policy have not only contributed to world peace but they have had many benefits for Turkey as well. He said eliminating visa requirements with neighboring countries has had positive economic, political and social effects for Turkey, adding that a nationalist perspective was too ideological to recognize these advantages.
Aktay noted that the CHP will be able to win more votes if it generates constructive opposition instead of following a nationalist line, warning that a nationalist discourse will cause Turks to worry about the possibility of an economic crisis and discourage them from voting for the CHP.
