At the analysis it is indicated that with the election of Derviş Eroğlu , who is a right-wing nationalist leader, as the president, the TRNC and the Cyprus Problem have entered a new phase. It is also mentioned that the elections were held at a time when the long negotiations between Mr. Talat and Mr. Hristofyas came to a certain point, Turkey’s negotiations on the EU membership focused on the Cyprus problem, and the TRNC’s domestic problems were out of control.
It is suggested at the analysis that the politics and the people in the Northern Cyprus have been going through a serious change and transition period in the last ten years. It is also highlighted that in the phase started with the EU membership brought to the agenda in 2003, a new elite group, the left-wing CTP-BG, had the majority of the votes and consequently came to power. With the election of the President Mehmet Ali Talat, the leader of the CTP-BG, as the second President of the TRNC in 2005, the transformation ended.
At the analysis it is mentioned that the Turks in Cyprus were frustrated when the international actors had not kept their promises to remove isolations and the negotiations between Mr. Talat and Mr. Hristofyas had not resulted with serious outcomes although the people had great expectations in advance. It is also reiterated that the new political atmosphere in the TRNC and the leadership of the President Derviş Eroğlu will have an affect on the attempts to solve the Cyprus problem.
