Have New Documents on 1915 Incidents Been Found?

What causes the genocide claims to be on the world agenda recently? Have new documents on this issue been found and do these documents support their genocide claims? In other words have new and more powerful channels of propaganda for the Armenian Diaspora been found and has a serious progress been made?

We should understand that neither the first possibility nor the second one is valid for the USA and Sweden to approve the genocide claims as a resolution in their parliaments. We are not closer to historical knowledge more than in the past. Neither new information on 1915 incidents has been found nor has the present information more convincingly been brought on the world agenda. As a matter of fact, people have more historical awareness about the fact that the parliaments cannot have the authority to evaluate a historical incident. And it can even be said that even though they are more organized now, the Armenian nationalists may have considerably lost power to Turkey’s recent steps for Armenia.

Armenian nationalism like all other nationalisms does not want to end problems with its enemies that are the reasons of its existence. The end of problems means the end of their legitimacy and psychological foundation. The relations with Armenia was affected by Turkey’s foreign policy on zero problem for the last eight years and it got reactions from the Armenian nationalists as it had been expected; yet this opposition also left them alone to some extent. Therefore, it is not possible to claim a causal relation between the approval of the genocide claims by the parliaments in the USA and Sweden and the rise of the Armenian claims.

It will be better if we make a connection between this relation and Turkey’s gaining power in foreign policy and having more authority. Turkey’s foreign policy for the last eight years has increased the relations in its geopolitical and historical region; and has enabled sharing peace and prosperity. Initially, the approach that takes initiative or pay attention to negotiation in order to solve the problems was possibly considered futile and a dream with no advantage; but as time passed it was proved that it was a role with efficiency and respect.

The emergence of this role with this kind of activity actually corresponds with the sociological models. There are not any social relations model in which the negotiators do not get social efficiency and esteem. Without a doubt, in order to play this role being Turkey is important, but not enough. The personal characteristics and attitudes of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are very significant for this role and the public sympathy.

Davutoğlu has become such a legend among the Arab nations in terms of his problem solving and negotiation abilities that he takes place in anecdotes. Insomuch that when they confront an insurmountable problem in their daily lives, the Arabs say “Only Davutoğlu can solve this” or “Even Davutoğlu cannot solve this” to express the impossibility.

Because of Davutoğlu’s attitude based on his deep, sincere, and face to face contacts, Turkey has diplomatic gain not only in the Arab states but also in all the Balkans. He has relations with Serbia even without offending the Bosnians. It is known that he has contacted with Serbian leaders for eleven times in a short time. It is possible to expect these contacts to solve the problems and create new relations.

It can be argued that this kind of relations has the aim of determining the relations with Armenia and breaking the ice. Naturally the problems are not few; yet they are not insurmountable, either. Due to the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan-Armenia relations is one of the barriers to solve these problems. However, the foreign policy attitudes particularly under the authority of Davutoğlu would have no hardship in overcoming this problem.

In this context, the approval of genocide resolution is not only sabotage for Turkey’s foreign policy which focuses on zero problem idea, but also it is a serious attack to the solution of problems with Armenia. Bringing the problem on the agenda again is inappropriate for the improving relations between Turkey and Armenia. However, it is clear that this inappropriateness can be associated with sabotaging these relations willingly.

In that sense this inappropriateness fulfilled its mission; confused the minds of people in Turkey; and made it more difficult to search for solutions. The statements of the President on Armenian fugitives in Turkey, the returning of the Turkish ambassadors to Turkey, and epic references to the cult of ancestors are all the outcomes of this turmoil.

Even if the saboteurs have become successful, there is always a way to recover it. The answer lies in not getting up with anger and even if one does, fighting with his/her anger and knowing how to act properly.
