When the vote by a Congressional Committee in Washington on the Armenian resolution was 23 to 22, the Turkish public reacted to this resolution. Therefore, the reaction of the Turkish public shows that it is possible to have commonality in reaction although it is impossible to reach an agreement in politics. Thus, regardless of the heated debates and hardships in politics due to tensions, new problems make us to be aware of what is going on. However, how long it will keep us awake is another issue. Moreover, what is more important is whether we take the news as good news in order to defeat our enemies or with a deep sorrow.
Indeed, the Armenian issue is complicated. Even if we need to confront history, it is awkward and useless for the USA whose history is full of various massacres and wars, to remind us this issue. But, no one really feels the pains of Armenians and human beings of a hundred year ago. It is a right to expect the ones who are ready to feel the pains of Armenians and announce this to the world, similarly to be sensitive to the events happening just around them. If they are sensitive because they do not want the situations get worse, their attitudes may be respectable. But, if it is so, these attitudes are supposed to end today’s cruelty.
This mentality should definitely be handled cautiously. A justice claim for the past events by no means can be hold responsible for today’s cruelty. However, if these countries are the USA, France, and Holland, the attempts of these countries to question Turkey’s history, in the strictest sense of the word, is awkward.
The determination of historical event with a parliamentary resolution is an illustration of the essence of history. History is never an objective reflection of past events. If a historical event does not interest us today, it is not even history for us. And when we are interested in a historical event, it means we do not understand the true essence of the event but our perspective is what matters. If there is objective history in real sense, it must be possible as long as we are “disinterested”. However, “interest” is a key word and it is more related to “interest, profit” than objectivity.
That is why we do have neither cognitive opportunities nor fair judicial authorities in order to provide justice today for 1915 events or the events before or after that date. The courts formed in the heat of the moment generally have more evidence; yet it is a historical truth that the courts are formed by the victorious sides and they can issue the decision they want. History is written by the victors. As long as the history, written by the victors, does not satisfy pure consciences, it causes gradual resistances.
Therefore, expecting history to reveal the naked facts sooner or later is in vain. If possible, history should be recorded in the heat of the moment and justice should be provided before it is late.
Justice delayed is not justice. History is by no means different from it. Confronting history and providing justice after the people who had some responsibilities in history passed away, means it evidently has some connections with today’s politics.
The ones who are seeking justice today showing their being oppressed as an excuse has become an alliance of the cruelest ones for justice. Thus, it illustrates that they are actually looking for revenge or power not justice. They are evidently no more than a resurrection of “the sorrows in the past” with the intention of demanding power and interest.
This confrontation neither will offer an advantage to the sufferers nor will it have a potential of imposing sanction on the torturers. And so, it is the field of Economy-Politics to understand who will benefit from this confrontation.
The genocide discourse is an economy-politics issue and it might be a breaking point of optimism towards Turkey’s increasing role. It can be seen as a warning for Turkey in order to give the impression that Turkey’s increasing role in foreign politics is problematic. This warning is certainly not a warning to dissuade Turkey from its route. However, this also illustrates that a powerful, active, and independent Turkey will not meet acclaims and cheers. Every year this issue is brought to the agenda and it is time for Turkey to adopt a new different attitude toward this issue. Let the USA approve the resolution because it is evident that it wants to hold Turkey hostage. It did until now, yet Turkey can end this and end considering it as a complex.
